What does the new Amnesty report say about South Asia and Sri Lanka?

Amnesty International’s recent report revealed some stark truths about Sri Lanka: human right violations, government crackdown of protests, and how the global west is ignorant about these violations. Amnesty’s Senior Director for Human Rights Impact Deprose Muchena highlighted the “sickening double standards” the world continued to face in the protection of human rights. Commenting on how Sri Lanka’s protest movement last year sparked inspiration around the world, Muchena urged Sri Lankans to use global solidarity to further their cause for human rights.

Muchena also spoke about the importance of centering social and human rights protection during any economic intervention, especially as Sri Lanka begins to execute its 17th programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
