Over the last few years, it has been our endeavour to tell immersive, engaging and incisive stories about Sri Lanka, with the strong backbone of journalistic integrity. Now, we think it is the right moment to take things up a notch. It’s time to train our lens on the deeper issues, the untold tales and the hidden heroes.
Roar Spotlight
We are proud to announce the launch of Roar Spotlight, a monthly package of in-depth stories connected by a common theme, worked on in collaboration by our team of writers, editors, photographers and graphic designers. The idea behind this new initiative is to undertake an exploration of some of the pressing issues of our time, and present several different ways to understand them.
Colombo's Unseen
In this first series, called Colombo’s Unseen, our focus is on some of the communities—and individuals—that are often overlooked or forgotten, especially as the city burgeons and spills at its seams. From the uncertain future of a community that has always lived besides a railway line to the grim daily reality of the sweepers who keep our streets clean, we scoured the city for stories that are rarely dwelled on — even though they are often in broad view. We also found stories of persistence despite the odds, such as the man who endeavours to educate children from one of Colombo’s crime-ridden districts, in the hope that it will lift them out of a cycle of violence. Or the family that has kept the city’s oldest billiards club alive despite the daunting odds.
We have ambitious plans for this space. But your valuable feedback would help us do even better. Write to us and let us know what you think.
